Microdermabrasion

If you struggle with an uneven complexion and discoloration, all hope is not lost….but it can certainly feel that way at times. If you have tried everything from facials, buffing mitts, and even those harsh scrubby apricot kernel cleansers to no avail, you may need a more advanced treatment.

Dull, dry skin can give you an aged appearance. It often accompanies other unsightly skin problems that can make you appear older, such as age spots, sun damage, and fine lines. What do all these things have in common? Skin that needs deep exfoliation!

What causes a dull complexion?

Aging is the first factor. Skin cell turnover is proven to slow down with age. That is why you often see dull, uneven skin on older people whereas someone in their teens or 20s has vibrant, healthy skin that glows. Most patients notice their skin losing vibrance and vitality around age 30.

Irregular skin shedding can make your complexion look drab, too. Dead skin accumulates on the outer layer of your skin, known as the stratum corneum before eventually flaking off. The average person sheds more than half a million skin cells each day. That’s a lot of skin.

People with dull skin have a harder time shedding these cells normally. That causes an unattractive buildup, leaving your skin surface uneven and mucky looking. This damage is cumulative, and the longer you wait, the worse the problem gets. If you have discoloration or photo-damaged skin, that only compounds the problem.

What causes a dull complexion - Microdermabrasion

The Skin Shedding Cycle

A full skin cycle starts from when the baby skin cells are born until they are ultimately shed away. Skin cell formation starts in the deepest layer of your epidermis, which is your skin’s outermost layer. These delicate new cells are not yet ready for the outside world. Think back to when you scraped your knee as a child. That raw, pink skin you saw was those tender baby skin cells.

The Skin Shedding Cycle - Microdermabrasion

As the skin cells mature, they toughen up and rise to the surface of your epidermis where you can see them. Being closer to the skin surface means that they can get damaged by the environment easily. Air pollution, sun exposure, drying soaps, etc. can dry out these aging skin cells over time.

As the cells grow older, they finally reach the end of their life cycle. Here they naturally fall off your skin surface. This process takes approximately six weeks start to finish.

Who needs microdermabrasion?

Mature skin cells don’t always slough off on their own efficiently. Some people need a little help. That is where microdermabrasion comes in handy. Microdermabrasion speeds the cell turnover process, clearing away old, dead skin on the surface and encouraging the young skin beneath it to wake up and get moving.

Microdermabrasion is also great for people who suffer from discoloration. Undesirable pigmentation can affect nearly any skin type, whether you have dark marks leftover from acne or hyperpigmentation from injury, environmental damage, or aging. Microdermabrasion gently removes the upper skin surface so that old age spots, dark marks, scars, and sun damage will dramatically soften in appearance.

Who needs microdermabrasion

Why should you choose microdermabrasion over other treatments?

Microdermabrasion is a great alternative to chemical peels since it is minimally invasive and has zero downtime. That makes it perfect for busy mums, students, and professionals who want glowing skin but can’t justify taking time out of their hectic schedules to recover at home. There are no harsh chemicals, no unnatural ingredients, and it is ideal for sensitive skin that can’t tolerate lasers or peels.

Why should you choose microdermabrasion over other treatments

Microdermabrasion is a proven way to reverse skin aging

Our minimally-invasive skin treatment gently and painlessly removes the top layer of skin. This clears away all that old, dead skin that has been mucking up the surface for ages so that the young, healthy skin that is hiding beneath it can shine through. Microdermabrasion is a safe, effective way to renew the texture and color of your skin. It is more effective than home exfoliating scrubs, yet gentler than peels or lasers.

What can microdermabrasion do for your skin?

  • Deeply exfoliates away dead skin
  • Refreshes your appearance instantly
  • Eases the look of fine lines
  • Brightens and promotes skin evenness
  • Stimulates new cell growth
  • Improves mild textural issues
  • Reduces acne breakouts and congestion
  • Softens the look of scars, dark marks, sun spots, and more

What to expect during treatment

After a skincare consultation, you will lay back in our comfortable treatment chair and then the magic begins. We will use a small handheld wand to spray finely ground crystals over your skin. These crystals polish away the top layer of skin. Think of it like sandblasting for your skin. However, the device is carefully controlled to ensure just the right amount of skin is removed without causing any damage.

The wand then sucks away the crystal debris, along with all that dry, dead skin that has been plaguing you for so long.

Microdermabrasion is completely painless. You may feel a slight tickle at most as it moves across your skin surface. You will also hear and feel the suction as our skincare specialist moves the wand over your face. It is sort of like a soft whooshing noise that is so gentle, it could put you right to sleep. Most patients find microdermabrasion treatments nice and relaxing. All you need to do is sit there with your eyes closed and voila! New skin in 30 minutes or less. That is how long it usually takes to perform on the entire face.

What to expect after treatment

The effects starts working right away. When you leave the appointment, that healthy, pink skin underneath will be visible. Your skin is left refreshed and rejuvenated with a youthful glow. Age spots and dark marks will diminish over time. Effects are visible right away, but six sessions are recommended for best results. It is important to avoid the sun in the days following treatment since this fresh new skin is more delicate. Treatment can be repeated every two weeks as needed.
